What Message Are We Sending to Young People? ask Lib Dems.

Liberal Democrat Janet Godden was disappointed that her motion raising concerns about the use of the electronic "mosquito" device to disperse groups of teenagers from public places was thrown out by the Tories at yesterday's Council meeting.

Recognition of the importance of equality.

County Councillor Zoé Patrick, Liberal Democrat Leader, was delighted that her motion, calling for the Oxfordshire County Council to sign the EU Charter of Equality for women and men in local life, was agreed by Council yesterday at its meeting of full Council.

"20 is plenty" agreed by Council.

Liberal Democrat Alan Armitage was delighted that his motion to agree, in principle, to 20mph speed limits in Oxford City and in other areas that need them was agreed without dissent at the Council meeting yesterday.

Eco-town proposals "in wrong place", say Lib Dems.

The Goverment's proposal for an Ecotown at Weston Otmoor was condemned by Liberal Democrat Councillor Dermot Roaf in a debate at County Hall on Tuesday 17 June.

Local Dismay at Bus Route Change.

Local Liberal Democrat County Councillor Roz Smith has spoken of her residents' dismay at changes to the No. 10 bus route, which now no longer serves residents in the Florence Park area. And there was concern that the new route now means buses doing a u-turn on the busy Between Towns Road (B4495) outside the Temple Square shopping centre and right next to one of the busiest pedestrian crossings in Oxford.

Woodstock Road Cycle Track Victory.

County Councillor Dermot Roaf (on behalf of local cyclists) has been pressing the County for over a year to extend the cycle track on the wide pavement on the west side of Woodstock Road south of Bainton Road. There is a gap between the end of the bus-lane and the start of the cycle track at Bainton Road and the traffic island near Moreton Road makes the road very narrow and frightening for cyclists.

Liberal Democrats have called for careful monitoring of the A34 highway works to minimise disruption and noise.

Children & Young People - Tories Complacent in Face of Criticism.

The recent review of provision for children and young people in Oxfordshire (carried out by the Audit Commission) made some stinging criticisms of local services - and led to the County Council losing a star in the Audit Commission assessment. But the Cabinet at its meeting last week dismissed these with platitudinous statements that all is now on course to improvements.

Council's Annual Report - "Could Do Better".

Liberal Democrats have expressed their disappointment at the draft Annual Report which was presented to this week's Cabinet meeting, and in particular the apparent bias it showed towards the north and west of the county.

County's Slowness Hurting Small Business.

Liberal Democrats have raised concerns that the County Council is not paying its invoices to small businesses in time and thus hitting some of the local businesses in Oxfordshire. A recent report showed that the County's performance in this area was getting worse.

Abingdon Councillor Supports Local Library - by Writing Verse!

Abingdon County Councillor Lesley Legge will be joining staff and library users at Abingdon Library to show her support for the library on "Join A Library Day". April 26th is the national launch of the biggest publicity campaign ever to encourage people to join and use their local library, and Abingdon library will be offering tours of the library, including the rooms not normally open to the public, and free refreshments between 2pm and 4pm.

Lib Dem Action on Marcham Road Hold-Ups.

Local people have suffered from a lack of foresight on the part of the County Council over the temporary roadworks on the Marcham Road in Abingdon. Liberal Democrat County Councillor Lesley Legge has been actively working towards overcoming the knock-on effect of these roadworks which have gridlocked the town centre this week as well as causing long delays on the road itself. Cllr Legge immediately:

Easier Bus Travel Opposed.

Many people understand the frustration of not being able to use the ticket from one bus on another operator's services. Liberal Democrat Leader, Councillor Zoé Patrick has found many excellent schemes in other areas of the country where multi-ticketing is flourishing. For example, the Solent Travelcard in South Hampshire is an integrated ticket that can be used with five different companies for just £5.80 per day.

Tories Bottle It!

A Liberal Democrat motion to use tap water instead of bottled at County meetings was unceremoniously washed out by the Tories today. Lib Dem Councillor Roz Smith had brought the motion to reduce the Council's carbon footprint, an aim which the Conservative administration supposedly supports.

County Council: Should Try Harder.

Zoé Patrick speaking at the County Council's Cabinet meeting today picked out three areas where the Council's performance needed urgent improvement.
