Government refusal to support post offices a disgrace

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 4th Feb 2008

Local Liberal Democrat MP, Dr Evan Harris, commenting on the announcement that five post offices in his constituency (Wythan, Lower Wolvercote, Dalton Barracks, Farmoor, Wootton Road in Abingdon) are proposed to close, said:

"The Government's refusal to support post offices is a disgrace and will lead to real threats to the vitality of some relatively isolated village communities, such as Farmoor and Wythan, will make it very difficult for older people to get to a post office and in the case of Dalton Barracks is an unacceptable way to treat service families. I have already met with the Post Office to express my concern and am due to meet with Postwatch very shortly."
