Vaccinations against cervical cancer

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 20th Jun 2007

Commenting on the announcement by the Government that they are in principle agreed to provide HPV vaccinations against cervical cancer to girls, Dr Evan Harris MP, a former public health doctor, said:

"Of all the arguments against a vaccination programme, the weakest are those from some evangelical groups claiming that a immunisation programme will encourage promiscuity. The idea that young people should be denied protection from cancer in a bid to deter them from sexual relationships is totally immoral, and would not even achieve its aims."
