Responding to the defeat of the 50p top-rate tax amendment at the Liberal Democrat conference today, Dr Evan Harris MP, one of the promoters, said:

"While I'm disappointed in the result, the superb debate we had showed that we remain the only party that is democratic and the only one that makes its leader justify their stance to the members, not just to the spin doctors. I am certain we will all unite behind the existing, radical, fair and green tax policy package."

"I supported Ming Campbell strongly before the debate and I support him strongly now."
