Dr Evan Harris MP welcomes HFEA extension of embryo gene screening

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 10th May 2006

Dr Evan Harris MP, Liberal Democrat Science Spokesman and member of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee, welcomed the decision by the HFEA at their public meeting in Belfast today to extend embryo gene screening to cover a wider range of diseases.

Dr Harris said:

"I welcome this decision by the HFEA since there is evidence that harm can be prevented if parents wish to use IVF techniques to avoid having children with a significant risk of developing a serious illness. But actually these are decisions that can be made by patients and doctors together and should not have to be decided on an individual basis, disease by disease, by the HFEA"
